Lest We Forget: Anzac Day

Lest We Forget
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Please note:

Both stores will be closed Saturday 25th April in observance of Anzac Day, and closed Sunday as always.
Teed Street reopens Monday 27th

What's On: Light Show

The much-anticipated Light Show has arrived at Auckland Art Gallery from London, and if the sell-out advance tickets are any indication, it will be well worth checking out from 11 October. Featuring 18 artists spanning 6 decades, these light installations play with senses and emotions and have been receiving rave reviews.

We're also loving the use of glasses in their promotional material!

Get Local

This is fantastic! The world's first "can for a coffee" cafe has just opened in Auckland, where on every Friday and Saturday morning local folks can trade a can of food for a coffee fix. Locals is situated on 13 Rose Road, Grey Lynn and every can of food goes to the Auckland Mission to be redistributed amongst those who need them. The not-for-profit pop-up cafe will run for a month, and hopefully longer if it gets the support it needs. Sign Painters Screening

If you're in Auckland on September 4 you should try to get down to the Capitol Cinema on Dominion Road to view the NZ premiere of the documentary film, Sign Painters.

Traditional hand-painted signage really is a dying art. As with the majority of skilled trades, it has been taken over by methods promising things faster, cheaper ...and mass-produced (We can't help but feel their plight!) Thankfully, sign painting is enjoying a small re-emergence in the dedicated independent sector where consumers appreciate craftsmanship. The highs and lows of these artisans were documented in 2010 by filmmakers Faythe Levine and Sam Macon.

There are only a few tickets left for the screening so you better get in quick, those going will be treated to some live sign painting! You can get your ticket here.
